The capital of Malta is Valletta. The name refers to the ancient walled Castle now used as city offices. The locals call the old town Il-Belt. Malta is historically significant. It was the place European knights defeated the warriors of the Ottoman Empire. The knights were the Jerusalem based order of St. John. Many of their 16th century buildings still stand in Valletta. The name of the city is in memoriam of the leader of the defenders of the city that turned back the Muslim invasion in 1565. So steeped in history is Valletta it has been a World Historic location for more than twenty years.
Any list of “best restaurants” is at best subjective. Never the less, here are five great restaurants considered the best in Valletta on several different restaurant reviews.

Pepe Nero is an exciting restaurant in the Il-Belt waterfront area of Valletta. The location is casual and relaxing for late evening meals. Views of the harbour are wonderful and the menu award winning. With two venues in one location, the famous Pepe Nero Pizzeria specializes by using only the freshest ingredients. The other venue specializes in seafood delicacies and fine steaks. The restaurant is open from mid-day until 3pm and from 7:30pm until 11:30pm.

Giannini family restaurant serves Mediterranean specialities using only the freshest ingredients. Many Valletta restaurants have harbour views but few compare with the Giannini terrace. The ala carte menu changes with season and is award winning. Giannini is popular for business lunches and couples flock to Giannini for romantic evening dining overlooking the harbour lights. Open Monday through Sunday for lunch the restaurant is open for evening dining on Wednesday through Saturday.

Malata is a dining experience, both for French and Mediterranean dining and location. Situated in the center of Valletta, Malata has an outdoor terrace for warm seasons and an ancient vaulted ceiling cellar restaurant popular with residents and visitors alike. The food is world class. What you hear, most often, about Malata are the funny caricatures of the politicians of the world that crowd the walls. Open for lunch and dinners Tuesday through Saturday, many nights great Jazz is heard pleasing diners.

Il-Kartell is a most unusual Valletta restaurant. It has a gluten free menu and it is open all week, including Mondays for lunch and for dinner. Your children are welcome and the restaurant has inside and outside dining with excellent views. The menu is Mediterranean and Maltese at pricing considered a great value.

Kon-Tiki is another restaurant with gluten free menu. Kon Tiki serves breakfast, lunch and dinner all week long. There are inside and outside dining areas, families are welcome and the pricing is definitely priced with  families in mind.

Amazing Valletta has 146 restaurants in some of the most amazing venues in the world. That is some achievement for a city with less than 10,000 residents. Historic buildings and traditions, fantastic food, great Jazz and friendly people make Valletta city an enjoyable experience.
