When you are visiting Mexico City, you do not want to miss all its tradition and history, so you can start with museums. However, if you think that all museums are predictable, you are wrong. The Museum of Tequila is something you have never seen before. Just like its name says, it is all about Tequila – the symbol of Mexico.
Tequila is a spirit made from blue agave plant, and since it was first made in 16th century in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, that is how it got the name. Thanks to red volcanic soil, this plant can grow in highlands and lowlands, but it is fascinating that it is what gives different flavor to tequila. Mexican law protects tequila brands, and there are even legal actions against international manufacturers.

There are different manufacturers of tequila, but it divided into five categories, and they are gold, silver, rested, aged, and extra aged tequila. This spirit is usually made at 40% alcohol content, and 78-80 proof, and some of the leading manufacturers do not even use additional water or dilutant.

Tequila and Mezcal Museum in Mexico City is located in Plaza Garibaldi, the well known home of Mariachi. This museum is built in frosted glass walls, with blue agave plants all over them. It is the best way to show the visitors the entire process of tequila producing; it all begins with blue agave cutting, and ends with bottling the final product. Besides that, the museum has to offer over 400 tequila types sold all over the country.

This two-floored museum was about 15 million pesos so far, but there are still many things to add, such as a tasting room when you can find out about the difference between tequila types, and creative way to connect Mexican history and cuisine. In addition, besides the tequila process you can learn in it, there is also a beautiful Terrace Bar where you can enjoy watching Plaza Garibaldi and the Mariachis.

Tequila and Mezcal Museum is certainly a “must see” in Mexico, and the best thing is that will take you just one tour to get to know the culture better. However, Mexico City has even more marvelous things to offer, but this museum is the best place to start.
