Joining the fun of summer in Ohrid has a specific worldwide flavor to it. The European Festival Association has recognized its reputation slowly through the years for being a formidable fiesta and has joined its vast group for the past 15 years now. The festival takes a few weeks to accommodate all the scheduled activities of about 40 concerts out of 28 affairs and 12 stage plays. It welcomes musical and theatrical artists alike to come and perform in the city's many theatres and musical venues.
A total of 1,150 shows have been produced for the festival where about a total of 30,000 foreign artists from over 56 countries and local performers join together for the musical fun and festivities in this town. The activities now are celebrated in historic monuments or establishments, a far cry from the original venue of only St. Sophia Church. Still, a number of the musical concerts are still being played at this venue up until now.
An additional activity called the International Master's School for the talented young takes place in the festival young artists from about 35 schools and attended various seminars perform by singing, playing the violin, cello or piano. For more than 50 years now, the festival has nothing to show but complete success. The 52nd Ohrid Summer Festival has nothing but more challenges that leads to contemporary and multitalented mastery of the arts.
Theatrical arts are also part of the festivities. The most common works performed on stage during this festival are from the works of William Shakespeare with 18 of his renowned titles executed masterfully in the theaters. It has also opened doors for local playwrights such as Goran Stefanovski with 8 of his works performed on the stages of Ohrid Summer Festival. It has also been host to a number of theatrical works of Plato, Sophocles and works written by comedy writers such as Goldoni and Moglierre.
This year's Summer Festival performed a rendition of Shakespeare's work such as 'Romeo and Juliet' where over 200 participants of local Macedonian artists and international actors pulled together to bring life to it on stage at the Ohrid Antique Theatre. The Albanian National Theater produced 'The Beggar's Opera', the theatrical work of Vaclav Havel, the Czech playwright.
