In Ancient Greece, carnivals are given for the honor of Dionysus, the god of wine. The carnivals were celebrated during spring to acquire good harvest and good breeding of their livestock. At present, Corfu somehow still honors those celebrations in a different approach.
Three weeks of feasting and dancing – imagine the fun. The culture of the people is incorporated in those three weeks as well. What exactly happens during those three weeks? Personalities and events are satirized by the people. They do that with unrestrained humor to bar them. They are often times masked or covered in soot in order to have "more fun" with their victims. By the end of the parade, there is a burning of the Carnival King of the people. A large bonfire is said to be able to burn the sins of the locals that the Carnival King carries throughout the parade.
Aside from that, the people of Corfu prepare and design floats for the parade. The grander and flashier the floats are, the better. The craziest ideas for the floats are put forward in order for the team to win the competition for the search of the winning float. The chosen winner will not be revealed until the time all the floats are parading on the streets.
The celebration begins during the first Sunday of the Carnival which they call as Asotos Sunday. They also have a trial run for the floats to be paraded in the streets so the people will have a glimpse of what to expect and what to expect more. Surely, this keeps the energy, fun, and excitement pumping. The people of Corfu as well as the tourist will get the right mood for the celebration ahead.
Tourists' first impression of the place might be it is full of class, elegance and colors of different culture and ambience. However, once they see and experience the Carnival festival, they might think twice. The place has it all but the celebration adds vibrancy and fun in the place. The place surely gives unusual sceneries.
Holidays in Corfu offers a great adventure for everyone. The food and wine alone is exquisite! But carnival festivals like this one should not be missed. It's one big food for the spirit.
