Around 50,000 years ago, a meteor landed to the Earth. It created a big land depression. The crater was said to be 550 feet deep and the diameter was measured to be 0.74 miles in diameter.
The Meteor Crater attracts a lot of tourists every year. It has a Visitor Center that serves as the gateway. You can find exhibits about the Meteor Crater and meteors in general. It is a very informative center making it a great destination for educational tours. It also has a theater that can accommodate up to 80 individuals. A 10-minute movie is highly recommended to visitors. It explains how the Meteor Crater formed. This is where you can also access the crater trail and the Subway restaurant. The restaurant offers lunch and snacks.
There is also a shop where you can buy gifts and souvenirs like jewelries with gems, astronaut ice cream, space-themed toys, geology kits, home decors, fossils, and t-shirts. If you will go to the Meteor Crater in groups for educational tour, take note of the property’s rules such as when entering the restrooms and gift shops. Only five students accompanied by an adult can enter one at a time.
Outside the shop, you will find an actual Apollo space test capsule. It has a viewing window where you can see the astronauts’ quarters. You can also access the Meteor Crater Astronaut Memorial Park when you go out the shop or Subway. Most tourists enjoy picnics in this park. There is also a Hall of Fame for astronauts in the park.
You will have two options in viewing the Meteor Crater. First, you can choose indoor viewing from an air-conditioned room. Second, you can choose to go out and follow the observation trail on the crater’s rim. The trails have signs to guide tourists. There are also telescopes that you can use to view the crater closer including the artifacts from investigations.
The land where the crater is located is privately owned by a family. The family allowed investigations starting in 1902. At present, the Meteor Crater is a commercial enterprise. Restaurants, gift shops and even movie theaters are available in the area. Plus, entry is costly but it does not prevent tourists from wanting to see the big meteor crater. Currently, the regular admission costs $16. Seniors get a $1 discount while minors just have to pay $8. Children ages five years old and below can enter free of charge.
If you use a recreational RV, there is an RV park near the Meteor Crater. It is great for night sky watching. The parking area has fences and a gate, private restrooms and shower rooms. Wireless internet access is also available. It is also a great parking because it is near a gas station, laundry and convenience store. You can also get discounts for admission fees to the Meteor Crater and foods if you use the RV Park.
